solar panels can only output d/c current as there is nothing to alternate the current. The new trend in solar is to have distributed grid tie inverters. These inverters are used to change the power from d/c to a/c. This means that each panel or small array will have it's own inverter that can output the desired voltage a/c instead of the native panels d/c generation. Most of these smart controllers will tie in with a charge controller for batteries
